Lately, there have been a lot of horror stories for home business owners. One guy just had four years of his life yanked out from under him because he wasn’t in control. So that is what this article is going to address. If you’re not in control of your business, you are looking for trouble.

Okay, just what do I mean by control? Well, loosely speaking, I mean that whatever it is YOU do with your business, you are dependent on nobody but yourself for every aspect of that business. Now, while that sounds nice in theory, in reality, it’s impossible. However, you want to be in as much control as you can.

Let me give you some examples.

Let’s take the recent example of the guy who had four years of his life blown away. He had a blog hosted on a free hosted platform. The owners of that platform decided, after four years, that they didn’t like his blog anymore and simply deleted it. No warning…no nothing. Now, had he hosted that blog on his own hosted service with his own domain, he wouldn’t have had this problem. Well, maybe.

See, even a web host can kick you to the curb if they suspect you of spam or some other violation of THEIR terms of service. Remember, you don’t own the hosting company. So they can, even though you are paying for the service, get rid of you at any time. Still, realistically speaking, you have a better chance of staying in business with a paid web host than with a free platform. So in that respect, you are at least in some control.

Another area where you want to be in as much control as possible is with product creation. If possible, you want to create products all on your own. Why? Well, let’s see what could happen if you were to outsource the product creation process. You could get a cheap product returned to you OR…you might not get the job done at all. Some outsource sites are very unreliable. By doing the process yourself, YOU are in control.

And then of course there is the promotion of your business. Sadly, this is one area where you are never really in control. Every aspect of business promotion depends on a third party. If you use pay per click, you’re reliant on the pay per click service. If you use article marketing, you’re reliant on the directories that host your articles. Any of these sites can put you out of business at a moment’s notice. Even SEO is out of your control. If a search engine wants to delist you, they will…cause or not.

What you want to do, as far as promotion goes, is pick the areas where you have as much control as possible…as little as that may be.

This is the reality that we, as home business owners, have to face. How we deal with that reality will determine how prosperous we are with our home business.
