Home Business Tips – Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts

As much as I hate to say this, running a home business can be dangerous to your health. There are a lot of reasons for this but one of the biggest is because of geeks bearing gifts. If you’re not sure where I am going with this, keep reading. I assure you it’s going to be an eye opener.

Okay, so what’s so dangerous about geeks bearing gifts and just what do I mean by that? Well, if you’ve ever attended forums that help people with their home businesses, you’ve probably asked questions about your business because you were stumped about something. Maybe those questions included problems with your site or hosting. This is where the problems start.

Some geek will either PM you or reply directly to your post saying that they can fix your problem with your site and they’ll do it out of the goodness of their heart…for free. You’re actually tickled to death that somebody is willing to actually do something for you and not charge you for it. After all, everybody on the Internet is nickel-and-diming us to death. But here is where the problem comes in.

See, and while not everybody is evil like this, a lot of these technical wizards do this simply to gain access to your site so that they can install some kind of script that send out 100,000 emails with their spam message that will not only make them a ton of money but get your host to shut you down in the process. It’s called website sabotage and it’s NOT pretty.

And there are other things they can do as well, such as install Trojans so that when you go to your site, some nasty program will be downloaded to your computer and transmit all your passwords and account info to the person on the receiving end. It happens more than people want to think.

Okay, so how do you protect yourself against people like this? Well, for starters, be leery of anybody who offers to help you for free, especially if you don’t know who they are. Ask them for references from people who they have performed work for. Don’t just take their word for it that they’re one of the good guys.

Ultimately, you’re best off going to a reputable company to have any work done that you need OR learn to do it yourself. There is nothing better than being self sufficient.

Whatever you do, please be careful. There are a lot of geeks out there bearing gifts.

And some of them are of the not so nice variety.
