A lot of people looking to start their own home business ask me if they can make money in a small market since so many people tell them to tackle something where there is a ton of demand, like health, debt relief and so on. Well, the question is a simple one. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t quite as simple. This article is going to go over the pros and cons of tackling a small market. You can then decide what you think is best for YOU.

Probably one of the biggest advantages of a small market is that the big name marketers can’t be bothered with them. They’re looking to make some really serious money and thus, are more likely to stay away from these markets. That means less competition for you.

Another advantage of a small market should be pretty obvious. Most people don’t know about these markets, thus the reason they are small to begin with. Now, let me qualify that because the above statement isn’t really 100% true. Sometimes a market isn’t small because a lot of people don’t know about it. It’s small because there simply isn’t a big demand in it.

Let’s take something like songwriting, which I happen to be involved in for over 25 years. Anybody who knows anything about music knows that people write these songs. It’s a very well known market. However, not everybody wants to be a songwriter. Same thing with the stand up comic market. We all know what a stand up comic is but not everybody wants to be one. So some markets are small because there isn’t a lot of demand as opposed to some obscure animal care market where only real animal freaks would know anything about it.

So in the case of a small market where there isn’t a big demand, the question is simple. Can you make money in it? Well, it depends on what YOUR definition of money is. If you’re looking to earn seven figures a year selling “how to care for ferrets” eBooks, I think you’re going to have a bit of a problem. But if you’re content for a four or maybe even five figure a year income from this niche, then yes…you CAN make money from a small market. You will just need to put in a lot of work to make it happen.

There is no doubt that the argument of large versus small market is going to go on for a long time. The above is just this one man’s opinion of it.
