Home business owners think they know everything. The egos in this business amaze even me. So let me get this much out of the way before we even begin. I do NOT know everything. In fact, if I live to be a hundred, I’ll never know everything there is to know about running a home business. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try to get as much knowledge as you can. But back to the topic of this article. Did you know? Not sure? Keep reading and you’ll find out.

Did you know that 97% of people who start their own home business fail within the first two years? It’s true. There are more home business failures than Carter has liver pills. But why? Why is it that so many people fail? Is it that we’re too stupid to run a home business? I don’t believe that. I think mankind, on the whole, is pretty smart. Well, outside of maybe the folks who hang out in underwater pole vaulting clubs. But that’s another story.

Probably the reason that so many people fail with their home business is because they’re not prepared to run one. Preparation requires several things.

At the top of that list is knowledge. I don’t care how hard a worker you are. If you don’t have the knowledge and the correct tools to do the job, you’re not going to get very far. For example, take somebody who is absolutely determined to cut down a tree. I don’t care how strong or determined that person is. If they don’t have the proper tools and know how to use them, that tree isn’t going anywhere.

Having said that, determination and commitment are also important. Most people really don’t know what it takes to make a business successful. When they find out what’s involved, they realize that maybe they don’t have the intestinal fortitude to get the job done. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met who have said to me that they’d do anything to get the job done but then when push came to shove, they weren’t up to it. It was too much work for them.

Another reason home businesses fail is because many people get into businesses that have no real demand. There is no money to be made in them. Take my joke about underwater pole vaulting. Do you really think if somebody, even as a joke, decided to try to sell information on underwater pole vaulting that they’d make ANY money at all in this market? Okay, that’s an extreme example, but trust me…there are markets out there that are very limited in their income opportunity.

How do you avoid getting into markets like that? You do your research. You actually look to see if there are enough people online who care about what you’re selling. By using simple keyword tools, this is easy enough to do. But way too many people don’t take the time to do that one simple thing. Again, this goes back to the problem of people not REALLY willing to do what it takes to make their home business successful.

If you’re spinning your wheels with YOUR home business, you might find the answer why somewhere above.
