Home Business Tips – Do You Need a Mentor?
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: home base business, home based business tips, home business articles, starting a home businessNo CommentsStarting a home business can be a daunting proposition. There are so many things to do that many people become overwhelmed. They then wonder if possibly they need a mentor or coach to get them going. Well, this article is going to give you the straight dope on mentoring and hopefully guide you to a proper decision.
Let me start off by saying that no one mentor or coach is going to be good for everybody. We are all individuals with our own needs. Each business is unique to a certain degree. The problem that you’re having may be something that coach A is not very familiar with but coach B is an expert at. So the first problem is, how do you know? Well, hopefully, these “experts” will be honest with you. Unfortunately, in this business, not a lot of people are. They pretend to be experts in everything. Trust me, nobody is an expert in everything.
But how do you know if you even need a mentor to begin with? Well, my rule of thumb is simple. If you have a good head on your shoulders, can get through information quickly, can teach yourself just about anything and can identify when something isn’t quite right, you probably don’t need a mentor. Problem is, how many of us fall into the above description? As much as I know, and I know quite a bit, I still need help from time to time with certain things. When I do, I go to an expert in THAT area. That’s the key. You have to know who to go to.
And that is also the problem. When you’re first starting out, you don’t know who to trust. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is through trial and error. Sure, you can ask your friends for recommendations, but don’t expect them to be fool proof…especially if you’re friends are just starting out as well.
But let me give you a little piece of advice that I think will help. Those who are most eager to take your money are probably the least qualified to teach you. I make my potential students write me a 3,000 word essay on why they think they’ll make a good candidate. I turn down about 99% of the applicants. I won’t get into the reasons here. Suffice it to say, I’ve seen enough of this in six years to know who is serious and who is just going to waste my time. Blunt enough?
I probably haven’t really answered your question as to whether or not you need a mentor. Truth is, there is only one person who can answer that question…you. If you feel you can do this on your own, go for it. You’ll probably learn a lot more going this route. But if you’re hopelessly lost and need some direction, then you might want to look into finding somebody.
Just make sure they know what they’re doing.
To YOUR Success,
