Starting a home business is like navigating through a mine field. There is a lot of hype on the Internet. Perhaps you’ve noticed. So what do you do when it comes time to actually start your business. Who and what do you believe? Well, in this article, I’m going to give you a few basic questions to ask the person, site, company or whoever, before you buy into their golden promises. These tips may just save you a lot of grief in the process.

First question I would ask is how long the site has been in business. There are so many fly by night companies on the Internet that come and go in a day. If a site has been around for several years, it’s a pretty safe bet that they’re reputable. If you’re taking advice from a person, find out how long they’ve been in business. This is easy enough to check by going to whois and looking up their web site. I’ve been around for a little over six years. While that doesn’t make me an old timer, it doesn’t make me a fly by night either.

Next thing I would do is ask around at forums and discussion groups. Find out as much as you can about the person or site. If a lot of people have problems with the site or person, believe me, you’ll hear about it. Good news doesn’t travel far, unfortunately, but bad news gets around so fast, you can’t miss it. Look up the word “scam” and the site or person name. See if there is a lot of smoke there.

It’s a very good idea to ask the site or person for explicit details about their program, product, service, or whatever. If they have nothing to hide, they won’t have any problems answering your questions. Truth is, most scam artists won’t even respond to you if you ask some hard questions. That’s how you can usually tell that they’re not on the up and up. I can’t tell you how many people I write to who never get back to me. I just write them off.
