Home Business Tips – How to Avoid Freelancing Nightmares

Freelancing is a great home business model. You don’t have to worry about selling anything other than yourself. However, there are some freelancing nightmares that can turn this business into, well, a nightmare. This article is going to alert you to what they are and how to avoid them. Hopefully, after you are done reading this, you’ll know just what to do when any of these situations arise.

Probably the biggest freelancing nightmare is the vague project request. You know what I’m talking about. It’s when somebody says something like, “I need 5 articles on the health niche.” Okay, let’s take a look at this closely. The health niche is a HUGE niche that encompasses a lot of areas. For example, there is cancer, AIDS, drugs, alternative medicine, herbs and on an on. A request for a health article is so vague and general that there is no way you can tell exactly what it is the customer wants. Ultimately, what ends up happening is you write the articles and half of them, if not more, are rejected. So, find out, in as much detail as you can, what articles the customer wants and get it in writing.

Another freelancing nightmare is getting paid. Let’s face it, there are some dishonest types around the net, to say the least. It’s going to happen that you’re going to complete an assignment and the customer simply won’t pay you and won’t reply to any of your emails. The way to avoid these nightmares is to use an escrow service. That way, if the customer doesn’t pay, he doesn’t get the work. Yes, it’s a little more involved than a handshake, but it will save you a lot of grief in the process.

Finally, there is scheduling. You’re getting lots of work and maybe taking on more assignments than you can really handle. Suddenly, you’re confronted with meeting a deadline that you can’t possibly meet. This is going to do nothing but tick off your customers. The way to avoid this from happening is simple. Calculate how long it will REALLY take to complete the assignment and then add about 3 or 4 days to it. That way, if something does happen, you’ll still get the assignment completed on time. Also, make sure you keep a list of all your assignments and how much time you have committed so that you don’t overbook yourself.

If you follow these above guidelines, you’ll find that you’ll be able to avoid the worst of those freelancing nightmares.
