I remember how excited I was when I first started my home business over six years ago. I wanted to tell everybody what I was doing and what I was planning to do. But a little voice inside my head told me to keep my trap shut and keep my ideas to myself. Turns out I was right. This article is going to explain why it’s best to keep your plans to yourself and IF you are going to outsource work, get a non disclosure agreement signed.

The Internet business community is a competitive place. People are constantly on the lookout for new markets to tap into and conquer. This is hard enough as it is, so the last thing you want to do is make it easy for somebody to tap into your corner of the world. Now naturally, once you’ve put yourself out there, as I have done, people are going to know what you’ve already done. But the key thing is this…it’s done. You got the first leg up on them…not the other way around.

Imagine you’re sitting in a bar with your best friend talking about your plans to conquer this brand new niche online. Now, your best friend may not have any desire to cut into your territory, but what happens if in passing, he tells one of his friends what you’re up to? This guy may not be so kind. He just may decide to get the jump on you. And then what? You might even find that the domain you wanted to get is taken, especially if you gave the name to your friend.

Most people don’t think it’s going to happen. It does. As a matter of fact, there are some domain registration sites that IF you look up a domain name to see if it’s available and DON’T get it right away…if you go back the next day, you’ll find that it is no longer available. Coincidence? I think not. So if you have your heart set on getting a domain, get it THEN. Don’t wait! You may not get another chance.

Finally, if you see that you are in need of outsourcing some of the work to get your business up and running, get a non disclosure and non compete contract signed. The last thing you want is to find out that the person you’re outsourcing the work to has suddenly setup shop in YOUR market using your SAME ideas. Hey, it’s going to happen anyway when copycats see your site. Don’t let them get a jump on you in addition.

As I said, it’s competitive out there. You need to retain every advantage that you can. And part of that is keeping things to yourself.

In other words…keep your trap shut.
