I have no doubt that the title of this article is going to confuse a lot of people. Isn’t making money and doing business the same thing? Well, this article is going to answer that question. I have no doubt that many will not agree with my assessment, however if you really sit down and think about this article after reading it, you may just see some validity in it.

Let’s start with making money online. Certainly there are many ways of doing this and not all of them involve running a business. Need some examples? Okay. How about taking surveys online? You certainly don’t need to run a business to do that. All you need is an Internet connection and an email account for the sites to send your surveys to. You can do this five minutes a day or five hours a day, provided you get enough surveys to take. This is in no way a business. It’s a hobby at best and at worst, a way to kill some time.

Okay, now let’s look at what it means to do business. Well, there are many ways to do business online as well, but they all have one thing in common…a business plan. What’s a business plan? Well, in simple terms, it’s a blueprint on how you plan to make money online. Now please don’t say that your blueprint can be taking surveys. You don’t need a blueprint for that. What you need a blueprint for is a REAL business, where you create a web site based on a product or service that you want to promote. Even if you’re going to do affiliate marketing, you need a business plan to pull that off successfully. Just hopping over to Clickbank and pulling out a product to place a few ads for is not doing business. It’s making a few bucks…if you’re even that lucky.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking just making money, if that’s what you want to do. But if you want to earn SERIOUS money online, you’re not going to do it by these hit and run little operations. If you plan to make a full time income on the Internet, you MUST come up with a business plan. And that plan has to be based around some fundamental need that the public has. You can’t sell something that nobody wants. So the first thing you have to do is identify a market, find out what they want and then provide a solution.

The above “blueprint” is quite simplified and very basic. However, it is the cornerstone on which all truly solid businesses are built. So, if making serious money is your goal online, you need to sit down and ask yourself…are you making money or doing business?

The answer will pretty much tell you how successful you’re going to be.
