Home Business Tips – Misconceptions and Assumptions

If you visit and home business forum and listen to some of the stuff being passed around as “law” you’d probably think that 90% of what you’re doing is a waste of time. I know that I have personally felt that way on more than one occasion. And then I got smart and realized that there are a lot of ideas being passed around as fact that don’t hold water. Misconceptions and assumptions are going to kill you in any area of life. But in the area of running your own home business…they’ll bury you. This article explains.

Let’s start with assumptions because they’re easier to define. Probably the worst assumption is that just because somebody has success doing something, that means YOU are going to have success doing it too. I hear this all the time. Some wet behind the ears marketer proclaims that starting an offline gold business is easy money because offline people aren’t Internet savvy. What they don’t tell you is that in order to approach offline people, you need some real solid social skills. Many people do NOT have them. So offline gold becomes more of an “offline nightmare.”

Unfortunately, there are variables to everything we do. Just because John Doe is able to run a successful membership site model for his home business, doesn’t mean that John Smith will be able to do the same. Maybe John Smith doesn’t have the technical knowledge or the discipline or any one of a number of skills required to run a membership site. Don’t assume that just because somebody else can do something and is successful doing it that it means YOU will be successful as well. Assumptions will kill you.

Misconceptions are a little murkier simply because very few people can agree on what a misconception is. For example, many people believe that there is a duplicate content penalty for submitting an article to more than one site. While Google itself has verified that this is not true, there are people who can show proof that it is. You have to be very careful about even deciding what a misconception is. Unfortunately, many of these are not so cut and dried. And therein lies the problem with avoiding them.

This is why misconceptions are probably the biggest cause of home business failure, especially when somebody tackles a particular market when in reality, there is a great misconception about this market having any disposable income to spend on YOUR product. Unfortunately, this misconception doesn’t come to light until AFTER you have invested time and money into your business.

That is why it is CRITICAL that you do all your research yourself and not rely on the word of others.

By avoiding misconceptions and assumptions (admittedly not easy to do) you can give yourself the best chance of actually succeeding with your home business.
