In the six years that I have been running my own home based business, I have learned an awful lot. In this article, I’m going to share a few things that I think are critical if you’re going to have success with your own home business in 2009. You may want to make note of these.

Probably at the very top of my list is organization and planning. So many home business owners have no real plan and are anything but organized. Be honest. When you get up in the morning, do you have a to do list? And if you do, do you REALLY follow it? I don’t know many people who do. What about your business plan itself? Do you have one? Do you know what you’re going to spend each month and have a projection for income? Or are you just winging it? Trust me, unless you have a plan and organize yourself, you are looking for some serious trouble.

Another important thing is understanding that you need to take care of your customers. Customer service has become so neglected by home business owners that it’s a joke. If a customer emails you and you don’t respond, how long do you think you’re going to keep that person as a customer? If they have a problem that you don’t take care of, you think they’re not going to bad mouth you all over the Internet? Trust me, they will. Customer service may be one of the most important parts of running your own business.

Finally, there is honesty. You are only going to go so far misrepresenting your product or service. Again, just like not taking care of your customers, if you put out a shoddy product, word is going to get around. The Internet is not as big a place as you might think. In some circles, word gets around fast. If you think I’m kidding, just ask some home business owners whose businesses were destroyed because of bad press.

Planning and organization, customer service, and honesty are absolutely critical if you’re going to have any kind of success in 2009.
