It was an eternity ago since I started my first home business. But I never forgot what it was like. I’ll also never forget all the mistakes I made. Well, I have learned from those mistakes big time. In this article, I’m going to share with you some of my top startup secrets…the good and the bad. This way, if you’re first starting out, you won’t make the same mistakes that I made and can get to the success that you want a lot faster than I got there. Today, I may be earning six figures a year, but it wasn’t always like that.

Probably my biggest mistake when I first started was not making a business plan. Some of you probably don’t even know what a real business plan is. Well, it’s more than just deciding on what business you want to get into. It also includes deciding how much money you want to make REALISTICALLY each month and how much you want to spend on advertising, among a lot of other things. Creating a business plan is a complex and time consuming process, which is why most people avoid it. Big mistake if you’re one of them.

Another big mistake was thinking that I could do everything I wanted for free. Let me tell you, the free options for most things, especially web hosting, are garbage. Do you have any idea how unprofessional free hosting looks to your prospects? For one thing, you don’t even get your own domain. You get this shared piece of garbage with a bunch of other people. Then you have to put up with the banner ads and popups that they force on your visitors. Think I’m kidding? Go take a look at Geocities. Talk about ugly.

Finally, there is your target market. Too many people try to reach for such a broad market that there is no way they can crack it. You’re much better off trying to appeal to just a small segment of a broader market. That way, you’ll have less competition and have a better chance of actually making some sales. Plus, that way, your product itself will be more highly targeted because the people looking for it will be looking for JUST that product.

So please don’t make the mistakes I made when I first started.
