If you are running a home business, you have assets. You may not know it, but you do…even if you’re not making a dime from your business. Many home business owners do NOTHING to protect their assets and end up losing more than just a web site. This article is going to go over just a few things that you should think about protecting if you know what’s good for you.

Let’s start out with something basic. How about your computer and any equipment and supplies that you might be using such as printers, scanners and even the copy paper that you buy? Is your PC really protected? Is it plugged into an outlet that’s properly grounded with a surge protector and UPS? What about your supplies? Are you keeping them in a dry cool place so that they don’t get ruined? Are you running things on spec? Does your PC data have a reliable on site and off site backup system? Are you one crash away from losing everything? Okay, that’s basic stuff. But there’s more to protecting your assets than just the actual equipment you use for your business.

What about your web site? Is that backed up? If you think that web hosts don’t go down, crash or plain go out of business and with it all your data, you need to think again. There are more horror stories of web hosts filing bankruptcy and leaving people with no web site than you can shake a stick at. If that were to happen to you tomorrow, do you have a way of getting back up and running quickly?

But that’s not all. See, there are things you need to protect that go beyond your business. What about your personal assets? Do you know that if somebody sues you for something you’ve done, you can lose your home and everything else you own if you haven’t formed an LLC? It’s true. I’m no lawyer, but by all means go and talk to one who is an expert in this area and he’ll tell you. If you get sued tomorrow, can you lose your home? If so, you might want to consider doing something about it…fast.
