Home Business Tips – The Importance of Password Protection
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: home base business, home based business tips, home business articles, starting a home businessNo CommentsI hear the horror stories about people’s sites being hacked, stolen or whatever every day. It seems that each story is worse than the one before. Just today, I read about one guy who woke up to find out that one of his websites was transferred without him either knowing it. How is that for a horror to wake up to? Well, while there is no foolproof way to keep this from happening (hackers are very resourceful) there are some things we can do to help prevent this from happening to us. This article is going to go over a few of them.
At the top of the list is the choice of the password you use to begin with. It’s very tempting to pick easy passwords such as your middle name or date of birth or your pet’s name, but trust me, you don’t want to pick one that is even remotely easy to guess. There are many ways to pick a password. I’m going to give you a real easy way that I’ve yet to see people think of.
Go to random.org. You’ll find many random generators there. What you want to do is pick the string generator that can generate strings of letters and numbers. Most sites will allow you passwords of at least 8 characters. Some, even more. Pick out a minimum 8 character length for the string and generate a random string. Use this as your password. I know it’s going to be impossible to remember but that’s part of the price we have to pay for security. Write it down somewhere so you don’t forget it. I use my excel spreadsheet. This is a free solution that works great.
If you have a few bucks to spend, spring for Roboform. What this does is it actually generates passwords for you that you can use, and trust me…these strings are tough to crack. And the best part about Roboform is that it will enter your passwords for you so that there are no actual keystrokes being made on your PC. This way, if you somehow downloaded a key logger that is stealing your data, you won’t have to worry about it with Roboform. You’ll never manually type in a password again.
Finally, and I know this is a royal pain, you want to change your password for each site you belong to at least every 30 days. For me, that’s about an hour out of my day once a month going through all my sites and changing passwords. But it’s worth the extra peace of mind that I get from doing it.
You can’t imagine the hell that you’ll go through if your site is hacked. These few simple tips will, at the very least, help prevent disaster from happening. No, it’s not foolproof, but it’s close to it.
