A question I hear a lot, especially on forums, is this one:

“Why am I not making any money?”

Well, unfortunately, there is no easy answer to that question. Usually, it will be followed by a brief rundown of what the person is doing to try to make a living online. What is the case, more often than not, is that the problems are many. I’m going to go over the most common in this article, though this list is by no means all exhaustive.

At the top of the list though, is no overall plan. Most home business owners will tackle their business by taking on some aspect of marketing, which in itself is not a business model. For example, they’ll say that they want to market affiliate products. The problem is, they’re all over the map, promoting everything and anything they can get their hands on. This usually leads to disaster because they are spread too thin. In other words, they need to focus their efforts in one area.

Another big problem is skill set. As much as people don’t want to hear this, some folks are just not cut out to run a business. They don’t have the discipline to get up each morning for one thing. They don’t have the necessary skills, such as writing, web design, programming, marketing or whatever and they don’t have the money to outsource the things that they can’t do. This leaves them in a situation where they are behind the 8-ball before they even begin. Like it or not, you can’t be as dumb as a stump and run a business unless you are loaded enough to just hire folks to run it for you.

Then there is the problem of improper research or not enough research. I have seen way too many home business owners decide that they’re going to sell XYZ and when all is said and done, XYZ has no market demand either because nobody cares about it or there is so much free information available that there is no need to pay for it. What ultimately ends up happening is that the home business owner puts up a site that MAY get a lot of traffic, but once the prospect sees the info needs to be paid for, they go elsewhere.

As I said, this list is by no means exhaustive, but these are the most common problems that home business owners face when trying to launch their business online. Conquer these few things and you’ll give yourself the best chance of actually running a successful home business.
