Internet Marketing Tips – Approaching Offline Companies
No CommentsI have to smile when I see marketers jumping on every bandwagon that comes riding into town. These days, the big one is marketing to offline clients. The basic premise is pretty simple. You offer your services to brick and mortar businesses in establishing a web presence for them. The problem, at least the biggest problem, is how to approach these people. This is where marketers get tripped up. They’re so used to dealing online, where there is no face to face contact, that hitting the streets becomes a real problem. Well, this article is going to give you some tips that should make the process a little easier.
Step one is to write out a script. No, I’m not kidding. If you’re that petrified of dealing with people offline, then the best way to get through that fear is to write a script. It should be simple and to the point. You actually want to spend most of the time listening instead of talking. Ask the prospect what it is that they’re looking to accomplish. Explain to them that you can provide them with a web presence and explain why this is going to help them. Remember, you know this business (the online one) very well. So don’t be afraid to share what you know. The key is to keep it simple and speak in terms that the prospect will understand. Remember, some of these people may have no knowledge of the Internet at all.
Step two is to make sure that you have a comprehensive plan written out that you can present to them. For example, web design, promotion, etc. Point out each step of the process EXACTLY what it’s going to do for the prospect and how it will help them. You need to make everything crystal clear. Your offline prospect is going to have a lot of questions. Answer each one honestly. Don’t sell them a bill of goods. You may get the initial sale, but if you’re planning on recurring income, if they feel you’ve sold them a bill of goods, they’re going to cancel any ongoing payments. Be truthful. You’ll be surprised how many people will just be happy to get a web page up.
Finally, be firm about your costs. Remember, you’re the professional. Don’t appear needy or desperate for the sale. Don’t try to negotiate the price. You have to come off as being confident about your skills or the prospect is going to get the impression that you don’t know what you’re doing. This may be the hardest part for some people just starting out, but it’s critical that you get this part right.
