Internet Marketing Tips – Are You Marketing For Yourself Or Somebody Else?
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: internet marketing strategies, internet marketing strategy, strategic internet marketingNo CommentsInternet marketing is an interesting animal. So many things, on the surface, seem so simple. Put pole A into slot B. Problem is, sometimes the poles we’re using aren’t all that great and the slots we’re sticking them into are beyond our control. Yeah, I know…I’m losing you. So let me get to where I’m going and you’ll see why it may not be a bad idea to make sure you have plenty of poles and slots.
Let’s take a simple example to start with. There are many marketing examples to choose from. We’ll take Squidoo as one. It’s simple enough. You create a Squidoo lens, put some content on it, maybe a link to a sales page of yours and then do a little backlinking to get your page up the ranks of the SERPs. Let’s say that your backlinking comes in the form of posting comments to other people’s lenses. Okay, we’re going to keep this that concentrated in order to make our point.
One day, Squidoo makes some TOS changes and suddenly, your lens has been suspended. Sure, you can get it back up but in order to do it, you need to remove some things that you really need in order to make your lens effective for your own marketing. So you make the changes. Squidoo still has your content to make them money, but in the meantime, your efforts have been diminished because of the TOS changes. So in effect, you’re now marketing for them and not for yourself.
This is a very simplified example but it’s been done so in order to make a point. When you rely on third party sites for your traffic, you run the risk of having your efforts seriously compromised or even shut down in a day. Trust me, it has happened before and it will continue to happen. So what’s the answer? How do we prevent this from happening?
The best way is to put as much of your content on your own sites as possible. I’m talking about getting your own domain and your own hosting. That way, you are in control of what goes on your site, within reason. Yes, there are going to be certain areas that will be prohibited by certain hosting companies. So you will need to check with your hosting company to make sure that the content you want to put up is acceptable.
Bottom line is this. When you rely on somebody else for your marketing, you run the risk of having that source shut off at any time.
