Internet Marketing Tips – Be As Clear As Possible

Even the pros like me make mistakes in this area. What am I talking about? When you communicate things to prospects, be as clear as possible. They may not take what you have said to be what you meant. In order for you to understand exactly what I am talking about, I am going to related a true story that was quite an innocent oversight but ended up with one very confused customer. After you read this article, you will understand why it is critical to be absolutely clear with your promotions.

I as promoting a special for a 127 page web site. I explained exactly what the person would be getting with this web site, right down to each individual page. I made sure that I covered each detail. Well, one person got this site from me and wrote to me asking where it was, that all they got was a file with all these other files. Well, yes, that was the web site. All you had to do was upload it to your hosting company server. Well, turns out that they thought they were getting the hosting and domain with it and the site was actually all set up and on the Internet already. Oops…My bad.

It never occurred to me that somebody might have actually thought this when I made it clear in the ad that if they sent me the name of their domain, I would modify the header of the site for them if they were unable to do it themselves. But by not specifically pointing out that they had to get a domain and hosting and upload this site to their server, they assumed that everything was ready to go. A more experienced marketer would have realized this wasn’t the case, or at the very least, emailed me with questions in case they weren’t sure of something.

The bottom line is, I screwed up. Whether you want to feel that way or not is irrelevant. If the customer’s perception is that you screwed up, then you did. Doesn’t matter what you think. So that is why I say, when you do any kind of promotion at all, you MUST make sure that you go over that ad with a fine tooth comb and see that all the bases have been covered. When you’re so close to what it is that you’re doing, it’s hard…I admit it. But it’s something that you have to take the time to do.

In the future, with anything of this nature, you better believe that I will specifically state that you need to get your own domain and hosting for this to work.

    You live and learn.
