Internet Marketing Tips – Do Keywords Equal Money?

If you talk to just about any Internet marketer, they’ll tell you that all traffic comes down to keywords, at least if you’re playing the search engine game. But do keywords equal money? Many people are under the impression that a keyword that gets tons of monthly searches means just that…money. Well, it’s not quite that simple. This article explains.

Naturally, when a prospect looks for something on the Internet, especially if they’re using the search engines (Google comes to mind) they’re typing in some kind of keyword or keyword phrase. Just today, as a prospect, I typed in “common hand problems” because I was having a problem with my left hand and I wanted to figure out what it could be.

Now, if you go to Google’s keyword too and type that phrase in, you’ll find two things. The first thing you’ll find is that the competition bar is very small, meaning there is not a lot of competition for this phrase. However, you’ll also find that there are only about 200 monthly searches for this phrase. Now, as a long tail keyword, you might think, “Okay, maybe there is some money in this one.” But let’s take a good look at it.

When somebody types in “common hand problems” do you specifically know that they are looking for these problems because they actually have a problem with their hand? For all you know, they could be doing research for school. Nothing in that phrase points to them actually needing help with a problem. But let’s say they did need help. There’s another problem with the phrase.

Common hand problems is pretty generic. You don’t know if what they’re suffering from is arthritis or something not so common like Dupuytren’s disease. Both are hand problems but nowhere near the same and both requiring different treatments. If you were selling a product that treated one of these, you don’t know how many people looking up that phrase are actually going to need YOUR product. It’s hit and miss. So forgetting about whether somebody is doing research or actually has a product, you don’t know what hand problem they have.

Now, imagine if this keyword had thousands of searches a month. Well, guess what? “Hand problems” and “hand problem” have over 12,000 searches a month between them. Both keywords are just as useless as far as money makers because we have no idea what the person is looking for who is typing these in.

What you want to look for are keywords where you are at least 99% sure what the person is looking for and that they are likely to spend money on a solution, such as “how to treat arthritis.” In this case, you can be pretty sure that the person has this condition and is looking for a solution.

Learn to recognize “money” keywords from “non money” keywords and you’ll find that your marketing works a lot better than it used to just looking at number of searches.
