Internet Marketing Tips – Do You Know Where Your Buyers Are?

If you’re an Internet marketer, your main goal is to find your buyers. No, they’re not going to find you just because you have a site online. It’s not quite that easy. You have to go out looking for them. This is usually done, first, through keyword research. However, this is where many people drop the ball. In this article I’m going to explain why and give you some simple instruction that will make it easier for you to reach the people who have money in their pocket…ready to spend on YOUR product.

I got the idea for this article from a mentoring student who I happen to be working with. I had asked this person to send me a list of keywords for each niche they were interested in tackling. In looking over the keywords, I noticed something that is very common among people just starting out doing keyword research. The keywords sent were very generic. In other words, there was no way to tell if these keywords were being used by prospects who had money to spend.

Let me give you an example so you can better understand. Let’s take the keyword phrase “lord of the rings.” Now, let’s try to think like a buyer. If you were looking up this keyword phrase online, what would you be looking for? Do you REALLY have any idea? I don’t. This person could be looking for info about the franchise in general, the book, the movies, video games, action figures, anything. This keyword gives us no useful information.

However, a keyword like “buy lord of the rings action figure” tells us specifically that the person looking up this keyword phrase is looking to actually buy a product related to action figures of this franchise. That is what marketers should be thinking when they target their keywords. See, too many marketers think like marketers and not like buyers. This leads us to another problem that I feel needs to be addressed here.

When did this happen? When did we all of a sudden stop thinking like regular people? We put this title in front of our name called “Internet marketer” and we forget that when we go anywhere to buy anything, we usually have specific questions we ask the salesman at the store.

“Excuse me sir, I’m looking to buy a TV remote control.”

If you look up “buy a tv remote control” you’ll find 480 monthly searches. These are REAL buyers. If you have a site that sells TV remotes these are people with money in hand looking for something to solve their problem. The same principles of the offline world apply to the Internet as well.

So stop thinking like a marketer and start thinking like a prospect.

You’ll find that you’ll make a lot more money if you do this.
