Okay, let’s just get right down to it. Do free gifts still work as far as bringing in prospects and ultimately making sales down the road? It’s a simple enough question that, unfortunately, does not have a simple answer to go along with it. But why? What makes it so complicated? Don’t people like getting free gifts? Well, it depends. On what? That’s what this article is going to address.

Probably the most important thing that you need to realize is that as Internet marketing has evolved, so have expectations. Years ago, if you bought a book on Adwords tactics, you’d pay a pretty penny for just that book alone and all it had in it was a basic PPC setup. There were no killer ad writing or keyword picking tactics. Heck, back then, those things didn’t really exist. Today, everything is so high tech. PPC advertising has become a science. So consumers expect more. Thus, something that you could sell years ago, you’d have to give away now…and most people would have little use for it anyway.

Thus, because of this, to make a free gift fly today, it has to be as good a quality as a product that you would sell. Now, you’re probably asking, how can I do this? The answer is really very simple. The key is focusing on a part of a problem that you explain the solution for in your free gift but then requires a purchase (maybe a piece of software) to implement the solution. A great example of this is Brad Callen’s free report on SEO. He explains exactly how to do SEO and then pitches his software that does most of it for you.

Sure, this is harder to pull off with digital info products, but it’s still doable. Focus on the problem, explain part of the solution, keeping just enough back so that your product is one that they’ll need to purchase. Does this take some time to execute successfully? It does. Sometimes it takes longer to create the free gift than it does to create the product. But once you’ve come up with that killer idea, you will have a perfect lead in to selling your product.
