You know, there are more ways to market your products and services online than I can shake a stick at. The question is, how many of these are built on solid foundations and how many are just fads that are going to end up sinking into the quicksand of Internet marketing heck? Well, if you’re not sure how to determine where your method falls, you might want to read this article. It WILL help.

Okay, the easiest way to determine if something is a fad or not is simply to see if the method has stood the test of time. For example, if you look at something like Google Adwords, which has been around since October of 2000, when it launched with 350 initial custoemrs, then it’s safe to say that after nine years, this method of promotion is not a fad. No, it’s not easy to master and many people lose money because they don’t take the time to learn how to use it properly, but it is by no means a fad. It is here to stay.

What about Twitter? Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ve certainly heard of this social networking beast. And it seems like everybody is jumping on the craze…even well known actors like Ashton Kutcher have joined the Twitter frenzy. But, is Twitter a fad? Will it eventually die out? After all, Twitter didn’t launch until March 2006. Now, even though they recently celebrated their third anniversary, it is still too soon to tell if they’re going to be in it for the long haul.

Truth of the matter is, it’s almost impossible to tell if something is going to be a fad or not. When something is new, there is always the chance that it will bomb out. Many businesses go belly up within the first two years. So you could be using a form of promotion for that long and suddenly wake up to find that it’s gone.

Having said that, sometimes it’s a little more obvious when something is going to be a fad, such as when the first pixel advertising site came out. You knew that one site was going to probably be the only big hit and the rest would all die a horrible death, which they did. Today, nobody even talks about pixel advertising.

Bottom line…use your common sense. If something looks like it’s going to be short lived, proceed with caution. Test it out. Just don’t throw all your marbles in.
