Internet Marketing Tips – Handling Your Newsletter

For those of you who publish your own newsletter, you may have noticed that there are some subscribers who aren’t quite sure how to handle themselves when they decide that the newsletter you just sent them is not something that they want. The responses range from submitting a spam complain to their ISP to sending you an email in response that is less than friendly. While you’re never going to get rid of all the problem subscribers, there are a few things you can do up front to make sure that your newsletter runs as smoothly as possible. This article is going to go over some of those things. Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll have a pretty good idea of how to handle your subscribers.

The first thing you have to do, as diplomatically as possible, is let your subscribers know what the ground rules of their subscription are after they’re signed up. This involves explaining to them how to handle their subscription when and if they decide that they don’t want to receive your newsletter any longer, either because they’re getting too much mail and can’t keep up with it, don’t like your style or don’t find the information useful. Explain to them that to stop getting the newsletter all they have to do is click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Make sure you include that link with each email or you are in violation of anti spam laws.

The next thing you have to do is let your subscribers know what they can expect to receive in your newsletter and how often they’ll be getting it. This way, they’ll know how often to look out for it and when they do get it and read it, there won’t be any surprises.

If a subscriber complains about you sending them ads, explain to them nicely that they are getting a free newsletter with quality information because those who purchase the products are making it so that this newsletter can keep on going. Remind them that they are getting a free service because of those ads and if they’re unhappy about it, all they have to do is unsubscribe.

The next thing you have to do is remind them that you are not perfect and at times you may send them an issue that may contain “objectionable” material. If they feel that some of the material is objectionable, to make their opinions known in a civil manner. Explain to them that there is no need or call for abusive language and/or threats.

If your subscribers know what to expect from you, there is less of a chance that you will have problems with them. The key is to lay the ground rules out at the very beginning. That way, you can weed out the ones who are going to be problems right at the start.
