Internet Marketing Tips – How Much Should You Do Yourself?

A very interesting conversation came up at a forum that I hang out at. It basically concerned the topic of having other people doing the work for you, or at least some of it. Now, I am all for outsourcing because if somebody can do something for you faster than you can do it yourself and it’s cost effective to have that person do it, I say go for it. But how much of your marketing should you do yourself? Are there areas where it is best to handle things on your own? This article is going to present one marketer’s view on this subject. It is by no means suggested that this is the one and only view.

Let’s take something specific like article writing. Almost all of my success is based on my writing and the quality of my writing. Yes, writing takes a long time. However, if I were to outsource my writing, would I have the same level of success? Would the writing be up to my own standards? And if I did find somebody who wrote as well as I did, or even better, would the cost of hiring this person be worth it? Personally, I charge 10 cents a word or $50 for a 500 word article. I would never pay somebody $50 to do something that I can churn out in 15 minutes. My times is not quite worth $200 an hour so I can afford to do my own writing.

Now, if you’re talking about somebody who is looking for a person to manage their help desk because they get so many support emails, that is a different story. Answering support emails doesn’t really contribute to your marketing. It’s really a pure liability. No income potential is generated from it. So the time that you spend answering support emails, you could be instead using to create new products or launch another ad campaign…or maybe even write a few more articles that WILL end up bringing you in visitors.

And then of course there are those gray areas where you’re not really sure if you should do something yourself or have somebody do it for you, or maybe even split the duties. Each marketer has his own priorities and ultimately has to decide what he feels he should do and what he should have others do. See, even though customer service doesn’t generate income, I wouldn’t trust anybody to communicate with my customers other than myself because I don’t know what somebody else might say to anger another person. At least if I do it, I have nobody to blame but myself.

What you need to do is sit down and think if what you are doing it better off being done by you or if you could trust another person to do it and not adversely affect your business. Also, you need to calculate if it’s going to be cost efficient based on how much you are already earning.

It’s not always a clear cut case.
