You’ve seen the ads, emails, forum posts or whatever. “How to make $X in Y Days.” And the numbers get more and more wild everyday. Before you know it, we’re going to be seeing, “How to make 10 bazillion dollars in 2 nanoseconds without lifting a finger.” Yeah, it’s enough to make you sick. Question is, how do you handle these claims and are you going to become part of the craze? This is not going to be a lecture on ethics and morality, but you might want to give this stuff some thought.

Let’s begin with how to handle them as the consumer. Hype sells. It’s a fact. The best salescopy in the world is full of hype. The claims run rampant. They push the emotional hot buttons of everybody who is looking to make a living online. If these claims didn’t work, marketers wouldn’t use them. But that doesn’t mean that you have to allow yourself to get sucked into them. You can look at these claims and take them with a grain of salt. Some may actually be legit, if the methods behind them are solid. But don’t take them as gospel. If you do that, you’ll keep yourself from being taken in.

Now, what about on the other side of the fence? Look, let’s be honest, as marketers, we want to put our best promotional effort forth. We don’t want to put up a sales page that reads like an obituary. On the other hand, you don’t want to make claims that you can’t back up. A recent ad I saw claimed that you’ll make $3,000 in three months, guaranteed. Now, that’s a bold claim. What happens is the people who buy this product don’t make that amount? What kind of fallout will there be?

Like I said, I’m not here to be your moral compass or your conscience, but the truth is, if you start making claims that you can’t back up, eventually, people are going to get ticked off. And that’s putting it mildly. You may ultimately end up ruining your reputation. And in my opinion, no amount of money is worth that.

Anyway, it’s something to think about.
