    Internet Marketing Tips – Learning About Your List

    I am very methodical about how I handle my lists. I treat them with respect, give them good quality content, and don’t pitch them to death. So, when I tried this little experiment this past week, I was prepared for the fallout. Yes, I did something different and the results were quite interesting to say the least. I am going to share those results with you in this article. I think you will find them interesting as well.

    First, some background in how I handle my list mailings. I usually provide each list with a free report and a followup newsletter. The newsletter can be anywhere from 17 to 62 issues depending on the list. I give them as much content as I can depending on the subject matter. As for sales pitches, I will mix one in every three or four emails. I don’t pitch my list to death. This system has worked very well for me over the six years that I have been email marketing.

    Well, this week, I tried something different. I announced to my various lists that I was going to be running a special Christmas sale and that they would be getting one email each day over the next 12 days. You know, the 12 days of Christmas? Okay, it’s corny, but I thought it would be cool. Anyway, I warned them that the emails were coming and that if they wanted to opt out that they should. Well, the results were quite surprising.

    About 2% of my total list size opted out. I don’t really know if that’s good or bad considering the circumstances, but I do know that under normal circumstances, I hardly get any opt outs at all. So this did surprise me a little bit. However, it did make me realize that these people would probably never be buyers if just the thought of getting these emails had them opt out. So in my mind, nothing really lost.

    But something else happened too. I got a lot of people emailing me telling me how excited they were about this special and were looking forward to it. Imagine that. I actually have people on my list who WANT to be sold to. That just goes to show you…give your list good quality info and they’ll buy things from you.
