I hope you’ve been enjoying my Internet marketing A-Z series. In this installment, I’m tackling the letter M. M stands for marketing, of course. However, it also stands for marketing plan. And let me tell you something, if you don’t have a solid marketing plan, you’re not going to succeed in this business. Many marketers think that they can just put a sales page up on the net and the visitors will come a calling. It doesn’t quite work that way. A marketing plan is the only way to get substantial, targeted traffic to your site.

Okay, so what’s a marketing plan? Well, the best way to define it is by giving an example. Sure, we all know it’s some way of getting the word out about your product or service, but how do we go about doing this in an effective manner? Well, there is no ONE way to do this. There are as many marketing plans as there are markets. So let’s just take one hypothetical situation and see what we’d do with it. Again, this is not written in stone.

Let’s say you just came out with some really breakthrough product. I mean it’s really unique. Well, you might want to start out with writing a press release on it. A press release, for a product or service that is truly unique is a great way to get some recognition. Some press releases, if written properly, can bring you in more traffic than just about any other form of advertising, at least in the early stages of your product launch.

In addition to the initial press release for the early stages of your product launch, you might want to go through a process similar to Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula. This is a great way to build up the buzz for your product and get a mass number of prospects to purchase on launch day. This could also be part of your marketing plan.

What about after the initial buzz dies off? Well, you still want to generate traffic to your site on a regular basis. So, you might use something like pay per click advertising. This is a very effective and targeted form of promotion as you only pay for each click that goes through to your web page. If your ads are targeted well and the sales page has proven to convert through the initial launch, this can very effective.

In addition to the above, you might also consider some supporting forms of promotion such as article marketing, video marketing, blogging and so on. All of these things combined make up your marketing plan. As a matter of fact, the above could be a decent marketing plan for just about any product launch.

Point is, without a marketing plan, you’re just throwing darts in the dark.

And that’s no way to run a business.
