Internet marketing can be a wonderful thing. It can also be holy heck. As with anything in this world, there is going to be good and bad. Anything that has been created for good can be turned around and used for evil. Having said that, complaining about all the crap that’s going around in the world of IM isn’t going to do any good without action. In other words, the buck stops with YOU. Okay, so what can YOU do to help improve the situation. In this article, I am going to give you a few tips.

At the top of the list is of course being responsible yourself. If you join the ranks of those who use shady marketing practices to peddle their goods, then you are no better than they are. I get a kick out of somebody who complains about another person’s marketing tactics but then turns around and does something just as reprehensible, if not more so. Hypocrisy is an ugly thing. So, if you want to help solve the problem, don’t become part of the problem. Otherwise, you don’t have a leg to stand on.

Another thing we as marketers can do is warn others. See, even though we’re seasoned vets at this business, there are those out there who don’t know what’s what. They couldn’t recognize a scam if it bit them on the nose. So expecting these people to steer clear of the mess is an unrealistic expectation. These new marketers need to be taught. They need to be shown what’s what. When I first started, I didn’t have a clue. So don’t expect the new guys to have one.

Finally, if you do see violations, report them. Don’t just turn the other cheek and let somebody else do it. It’s your responsibility to clean up the streets. We don’t have Internet police, so don’t expect anybody else to do the job. When the day comes that there’s actually some regulation with teeth in it, maybe then we can ease up a bit. But until that day comes, it’s up to us to report the violators.

If we keep things few things in mind, maybe, just maybe, we can make the Internet a little better than it is.
