Internet Marketing Tips – The Goal Post Philosophy
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: internet marketing strategies, internet marketing strategy, strategic internet marketingNo CommentsOne of the main reasons that I think beginning Internet marketers fail is because they get discouraged too easily. One big reason for this is because they set goals, at the start, that are too high and too unrealistic. Now I know a lot of people are going to disagree with this, and that’s fine. But I’ve been a studier of human nature for a long time and I can tell you from personal experience with people who have given IM a shot…thinking you’re going to make a million dollars a year right off the bat is a sure ticket to discouragement and failure. Thus, I came up with the goal post philosophy.
What exactly is this goal post philosophy? Well, it’s actually quite simple. When you first start marketing, you set yourself an initial goal that you know is going to be a piece of cake to reach. When I started, my initial goal was to make one sale my first month. That’s right…one measly little sale. I wanted to just see if it was possible to actually make money online. I didn’t even care how much. One sale was all I needed to give me hope. Well, my first month of actually getting into Internet marketing after wasting time on stupid things like surveys, I made not one but 25 sales. Can you believe it? I made 25 sales my first month.
Can you imagine how excited I was to make those 25 sales and actually earn over $300 my first month? Now, had I made a goal of $3,000 or something like that, what do you think would have happened? I would have been very disappointed and very discouraged. I might have given up. After all, $300 is not a lot of money. I certainly couldn’t live on it. But because I set my goals low, I had hope.
Okay, the next step is to move the goal posts for your next month, which is what I did. I made a new goal of $500 for my next month, which I hit. My next goal was $750, which I also hit. My next goal was $1,000 which I also hit. I kept moving the goal posts each month. I was slowly making progress. Today, those goal posts have been moved to well over five figures monthly, which I easily hit each month. I have since stopped moving the goal posts as I am now content with my income and don’t feel the need to knock myself out for more. I prefer to spend most of my day now in the recording studio or playing video games.
Had I set insane goals for myself at the start, I might have never gotten to this point. Like I said, many will disagree with this philosophy, and that’s fine. But from personal experience with myself and others, I can honestly tell you that setting modest goals at the start and moving the goal posts each month is the best way to keep yourself motivated.
