This is actually a bit of a rant. I’ve noticed, over my years of marketing online, that many marketers get annoyed with other marketers when they ask supposedly stupid questions. Well, here’s a news flash for you. There ARE no stupid questions. Just a lot of stupid answers. If you’re interested in my opinion on this matter, regardless of which side of the fence you’re on (questioner or one giving the answers) you might want to read this article.

Let me start off with the person asking the question. Assuming you’re not just trying to be a wise guy (I get a lot of them) I am going to assume that you’re asking your question because it is something you honestly don’t know the answer to and want to get an answer to. If you’re somebody just starting out, you might be a little intimidated by this. After all, you’re seeking the advice of people who have been doing this a while and don’t want to sound stupid. Well, let me set the record straight.

These so called “experts” were once new at this too. They didn’t always have all the answers. There was a time when they probably asked the same questions. Problem is, a lot of marketers seem to have forgotten where they came from. Suddenly they’re all high and mighty in their ivory towers and think that anybody who asks a question that should be “common knowledge” is either stupid or lazy or both. Hey folks, it’s time to come down from those ivory towers. Point is, you new people…don’t be afraid to ask questions. There are still those of us out here who haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be new.

Now, for you folks in those ivory towers. Yeah, I know, after years and years of doing this, it gets a little tiresome answering the same questions over and over. I get it. So here is what you do. If somebody asks a question and you just can’t bring yourself to answer it because you’ve answered that same question 1,000 times before, just stay out of the conversation. Don’t make the person asking the question feel like an idiot. It’s totally unproductive and makes YOU look like a jerk. Blunt enough for you?

There are no stupid questions. Just a lot of stupid answers. Hopefully, if we use a little common sense, we can reduce the number of stupid answers given on any one day.
