Internet Marketing Tips – What’s More Important – Content Or Marketing?
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: internet marketing strategies, internet marketing strategy, strategic internet marketingNo CommentsWe had yet another thread over at the good old Warrior Forum about what’s more important…content or marketing. Some people say that content doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is getting eyeballs to your offer. Other people say, if the content isn’t any good, people won’t GO to your offer. What puzzles me is that there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground. Question is, is one of the two sides right? I shudder the thought. But for better or worse, here is my take on the whole issue.
In order to understand where I am coming from, you first need to understand the mindset of the person who is actually going to be your customer…hopefully anyway. When they head over to the search engines, which is hopefully where you’ll be found, they are going there with a definite purpose in mind. This purpose is going to be different for each problem. But ultimately it comes down to satisfying the wants and needs of that person at the time.
So, for somebody who wakes up with a headache and knows they can’t take pain killers because of stomach problems, they’re looking for some kind of home remedy that will alleviate their headache as quickly as possible. Now, this can come in two forms…either an article with directions on how to get rid of that headache, or a sales page selling some kind of natural cure.
Which one they choose will depend on how they feel about each thing they read, whether it be the article or the sales page. In either case, the words on the page are going to be the ultimate decider as to which direction the prospect heads. Naturally, with most people, first choice will be the article IF it sounds reasonable. After all, it’s free info and all they have to do is go through the steps to see if they cure the headache.
To give you an example of this, I had an upset stomach one day and I really didn’t want to take antacids. So I looked for info on home remedies and I found this article on ginger tea. So I went out and bought some and sun of a gun…it worked. The content was just what I needed to solve my problem.
But…and here is where I toss the monkey wrench in…what if all the other types of treatments, mostly paid ones, occupied page one of the SERPs and I didn’t see the article on ginger tea? I would have never found my cure.
The question is…was the article on page one because it was good content OR was it on page one because it was marketed to get it there?
From personal experience, I can say that BOTH can happen. I have articles that I never did anything with other than submit them to one directory that get me thousands of views every month. Certainly there was no marketing involved there. Conversely, I’ve had articles that I tried to promote that still did nothing. The content was just as good as my heavily viewed articles, but even with promotion…nothing.
So, in my opinion, a lot depends on the content itself. Some can stand on its own if it’s heads and tails above everything else. Others can’t make a dent no matter what you do.
Therefore, instead of fighting the either or wars…why not just do everything that you can to get your content ranked? That means write good content AND promote it.
Seems to me like the logical choice.
But I am sure the content versus marketing wars will continue.
