Look, we all try to get a handle on what we can expect from our marketing efforts, so we look to find what’s “normal” when we do a specific activity. The problem with finding what’s “normal” is that external factors may drastically change your results depending on when and where you do your marketing. This article is going to try to explain, in simple English, why it’s not always so easy to find what’s “normal” when it comes to marketing online.

Let’s take for example the guy who starts a CPA campaign in the middle of December, just before the big Christmas holiday in a niche where buying is normally down at this time of the year. He pulls all the right keywords, designs his site properly and gets all the traffic he can, even going as far as buying media buys. Then he takes a look at his results and sees that he’s making a pitiful $100 a day when everybody who told him to get into this said he’d easily make $500 to $600 each day with this tactic. What is he supposed to think?

Conversely, somebody else can start the exact same campaign during the busiest time of the year for this niche and start cranking out $800 to $1,000 per day. They think they’ve hit a gold mine. Then, December rolls around and their income sinks to $100 a day. What are they going to think? They’re going to think that the world has just come to and end.

Now, somebody who has been doing this for a few years KNOWS that there are seasonal fluctuations for this particular niche. They know that when December comes, they have to have saved a few bucks from the months preceding so that they have enough money to live on. It’s called budgeting. After being in the auto industry for 10 years, I have seen the same thing year after year. The summer time was horrible. But as soon as the new models came out around October, sales started to skyrocket.

Sure, there are some niches that are “normal” pretty much all the time. You know what you can expect and know that you can expect it year round. However, I have found that to be the exception rather than the rule. Very few things really stay constant over time.

So, when you ask somebody what’s “normal” for a particular niche, please take their answer with a grain of salt. There are way too many factors involved to set anything in stone.
