Internet Marketing Tips – When the Conversation in Your Head Goes South
Filed under: Home Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online; Tagged as: internet marketing strategies, internet marketing strategy, strategic internet marketingNo CommentsInternet marketers are strange people. I should know…I’m one of them. Anyway, this article is going to address one of the biggest faults of many Internet marketers. I should know…I’m one of them. All kidding aside, I used to suffer from this fault myself. The results were not good. I’m talking about that little conversation going on in your head and what happens when it goes south. If you’re confused, don’t worry. I’m going to un-confuse you.
Let’s take the hypothetical conversation going on inside this Internet marketer’s head. He’s thinking of asking somebody if split testing their squeeze page is really all that important. The reason they’re asking is because of that conversation in their head…the one that goes like this…
“Do I really have to split test?”
“Not really. It’s not that important.”
“Thanks, that’s what I thought.”
Instead, what happens is that they get an answer that goes something like this…
“Split testing is crucial to getting the most out of your squeeze page…” and so on.
What happens is this. The Internet marketer asking the question doesn’t get the answer that they were hoping for because it doesn’t jive with what they wanted to do in the first place. In reality, what the marketer was looking for was validation…somebody to say, “Yeah, you’re right…you don’t have to that.”
When that validation doesn’t happen, they become defensive. They start making excuses for why they don’t want to do split testing or whatever the problem is. They have to justify their decision.
This is what drives me crazy about these people. If they don’t want advice, if all they’re doing is looking for validation, why ask?
Truth of the matter is this. There are very few subjects where there are definitive answers. It is rare that you’re going to get a 100% consensus on anything. I’ve been at this for over seven years and still there are people who don’t agree with me and who I don’t agree with on certain marketing tactics. That doesn’t mean either of us is right or wrong. We just have differing opinions.
Looking for validation is fine, but if that’s what you’re looking for, state it up front. State that THIS is the way that you’re going to do it, regardless of what anyone says and you’re just looking for opinions on the decision.
However, if you want to really improve as a marketer…listen to the ACTUAL conversation taking place and not the one inside your head.
You might actually learn something that helps you.
