This is a question I get asked a ton. “I just created this really great product, promoted it like crazy and I can’t sell a lick. What’s wrong?” Well, there can be many reasons why a product doesn’t sell, but one of the biggest ones is the reason I am going to discuss in this article. It’s called demand.

Demand is probably one of the strongest words in economics. Yes, when I went to college I took a lot of economics courses. I remember them teaching me the theories of guns versus butter. In other words, do we spend more of our money on fighting wars or more of it on domestic problems? Finding a happy medium is not always easy. But that’s besides the point.

The law of supply and demand is a lot simpler to understand than the law of guns versus butter. If the demand is high and the supply is low, prices go up because there isn’t enough of the item to go around. If the supply is high and the demand is low, then the price goes down because you have more than what you can sell. It’s basic economics.

So what does this have to do with Internet marketing? Everything. See, it doesn’t matter what product it is that you created. If nobody wants it, guess what? It’s NOT going to sell. You can try to do all the convincing that you want that people need it and advertise it through the roof. It’s still not going to make it sell any more units than it’s going to sell.

I guess this brings us to the $64,000 question. How do we know if there is a demand for a product that we’ve created? Well, for starters, you really should find out if there is a demand BEFORE you create the product. But that’s another story. However, to answer the question, in order to find out if there is a demand, you do a little research.

For starters, go to a keyword tool that you like and see what people are searching for. If you’ve come up with an idea to create an automatic back scratcher but your keyword research shows that nobody is looking for an automatic back scratcher, there’s a good chance that nobody is going to buy it, even as a novelty item.

Another way to find out if there is a demand for something is to hit the forums that relate to the niche you’re targeting. Ask people what they think of the idea. You might be surprised at the reaction, in either direction. But whatever it is, at least you’ll know. I mean there’s no sense wasting your time on something that nobody is interested in.

Why do products fail? Well, I’ve just given you a few of the many reasons.

That’s why the successes are so sweet.
