Let me start off this article by saying that I don’t have to work today. I could easily spend the day doing anything BUT work. However, if I want to get a jump on everybody else who is out there doing whatever it is that they’re doing, then Labor Day, for me anyway, is an actual day of labor. This article is going to offer some reasons why you might want to roll up your sleeves today and actually get some work done.

At the very top of the list is the simple fact that most people ARE taking the day off from business. So, if you’ve built your own private mailing list, there is a good chance that most of the people on your list aren’t receiving as many emails as they normally do simply because there aren’t as many marketers promoting today. That means there is a good chance that YOUR emails might actually get read. And yes, people DO check their emails on Labor Day.

Another reason you might want to get some work done today is because usually on holidays there aren’t as many distractions. You yourself aren’t getting as many emails as you normally would. So there is less going on to keep you from getting things done. I personally find that I am my most productive on days when there isn’t much going on. Also, on days like this, you’re less likely to get customer service requests as most of your customers are probably out celebrating themselves.

Finally, there is something psychological about working on a day when you normally wouldn’t. It makes you feel like you’re getting things done that you normally wouldn’t have gotten done, thus giving you an advantage over the competition. And make no mistake about it, if you’re out there working and they’re not, you ARE getting an advantage over the competition. This thought, in the back of your mind, actually makes you want to do more. In many cases, you will get more done today than on a normal day of the week.

Personally, I don’t work that much anymore. But holidays like this one make me want to put in a day’s work if for no other reason than it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something and that I didn’t just sit on my backside all day eating hot dogs and burgers.
