I want to thank my friend Bev Clement at the Warrior Forum for inspiring me to write this article. She brings up an interesting point that I honestly never thought of. I’m going to share with you, in a nutshell, what she said and then give you my thoughts on the subject.

In short, Bev says that with all the social networking sites out there like Twitter and Facebook, marketers are forgetting about their list and instead just focusing on sending messages to all their followers. Thus, traditional list building is going the way of the dinosaur. She also brings up a good point that a lot of the people following you on Twitter and Facebook aren’t necessarily interested in your marketing message. Some of these people just want to socialize. This is a very good point.

Okay, what do I think about all this doom and gloom? Well, there may be some validity to it. After all, these sites have become very popular. I personally know marketers who have over 10,000 followers at Twitter. I personally have about 1,500 but I don’t really spend a lot of time there. I use it quite sparingly. And therein lies my point to this whole article.

My success, or at least most of it, does NOT come from these wonder sites. I still have my autoresponder and still build my list on a daily basis. I get between 10 and 20 opt ins everyday. My list now makes up a good part of my monthly income…my articles making up the rest of it. I haven’t forgotten my roots. I understand the importance of building a list of subscribers and providing them with relevant content in order to help them with whatever problem they’re having.

But what about you? Have you bought into the social networking hype? Have you abandoned your list? For that matter, have you even started building one? In either case, I can tell you from personal experience that building a list is going to bring you a steady income for years to come.

I’m not saying to stay away from social networking sites…I use them myself…but don’t forget your roots.

List building SHOULD be here to stay.
