Product Creation Tips – Are You Spreading Yourself Too Thin?

As a product creator, I can honestly say that having a strong product line is a good thing. You never want to put all your eggs into just one product because you never know what can happen to it. External factors can easily render it obsolete someday. However, there does come a point in time when having too many products can result in spreading yourself way too thin. This article is going to explain why.

Products, like it or not, contain baggage. Part of that baggage is called customer support. Remember that? And the more complex your product is, the more customer support you’re going to have to provide. Sure, it’s one thing providing support for a 27 page report on building a list. But now imagine you’ve just created a full blown home study course and have just sold 1,000 copies on launch day. Do you really think you’re going to have time to support your other products when this thing hits the streets?

Now imagine that it’s not just one or two other products that you have to support but 10 or 20…or even 50. Don’t laugh. I know people who have created close to 100 products. I can’t even imagine what kind of support nightmares these people have. And if you’re thinking about blowing off the support, think again. That can only lead to dissatisfied customers…especially if you’re talking about high end products.

Okay, but how can you tell when you’ve spread yourself too thin? Fortunately, unless you create a ton of products all at once, this is easy enough to monitor. With each product you create, you will see how many hours in the day you’re devoting to supporting your products. Eventually, you will begin to see that you’ve reached the point where one more product off the assembly line and you’ll be swimming in more support nightmares than you can possibly handle.

If you’re looking for a specific number of products, forget it. Each niche is different, as is each product. Technical products, such as software scripts, are going to need a lot more support than ebooks. Some niches by themselves are more technical than others and thus, will need more support. There is no one size fits all. Think about a site like Aweber that deals with autoresponders. Do you really think they need even one more product than what they offer?

Use your common sense. But don’t limit your growth out of fear. Do it out of rational analysis of your business model.

    To YOUR Success,
