When creating products, one of the biggest mistakes that product creators make is that they don’t make it easy for the customer to find things. With large packages, this can be a total nightmare. The last thing a customer wants is to have to hunt for the information. This leads to an unhappy customer and more refunds. In this article, I’m going to give you some tips on laying out the perfect road map for your customers so that the info that they got from you can be easily found without having to hire a tour guide.

The very first thing that all your digital products should have is a table of contents. Believe it or not, not every customer is going to read your book from beginning to end. Some people are just looking for bits and pieces and don’t want to hunt around for it. And, not only should you have a table of contents, you should make it one that is interactive. In other words, customers can click on each entry and it will take them to the chapter that they’re interested in. This is easy to do with Word and other similar programs.

In addition to a table of contents, you want to have an index. This is going to take some time to put together. You have to go through each topic, each keyword, find its page number and then list it in the index along with the page number. If this is also interactive, it will help as well. Also, the index has to be in alphabetical order so that every concept is easy to find. Yes, this does take a little more work, but trust me, your customers will thank you for it.

Finally, you want to have a getting started guide. This will walk the customer through the product and give him some suggestions on using it. There is nothing worse than opening up an ebook or other product and not know where to begin. It can be very frustrating.

If you follow these few simple tips, you’ll have customers who will be a lot happier with your products.
