SEO Tips – Are You Deep Linking Or Deep in the Mud?

I don’t hear a lot of people talking about deep linking and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why not. Deep linking is a viable strategy for improving the ranking of your pages. In this article, for those who don’t know what deep linking is, I’m going to offer a brief explanation and then go over why this is an important strategy that should be added to your SEO routine. Keep reading to find out more.

Okay, so just what is deep linking? Deep linking is when you link to a page of a web site that is NOT the main page. For example, let’s say you linked to a product page on Amazon’s retail site. That would be considered a deep link because it is not Amazon’s main page. If you have a site yourself that is more than just an index page, you have pages that would be considered these type. Clear enough? Fine…let’s move on.

Why is this practice so important for SEO purposes? The answer is simple. By linking to pages OTHER than your main page, you give yourself a much better chance of getting the other pages of your site indexed. The key to doing this, however, is to make sure you’re linking to the most relevant page.

For example, let’s say you have a site that is all about games and the site is broken down into the following categories: Board games, video games and outdoor games. Okay, now let’s say you were commenting on a blog that had to do with video gaming. If you were to include a link at the end of your comment to your site, you wouldn’t link to the main page and you wouldn’t link to the board and outdoor games pages. You would link to the video game page because THAT page is the most relevant one to the blog you’re commenting at. This will give you the best chance of acquiring a RELEVANT backlink to your site.

One thing you need to be aware of if you’re going to deep link to somebody ELSE’S site. Some people frown on you doing this because they don’t want people passing up the advertising or whatever is on their main page. So, if you are going to deep link to another site, make sure you get permission from them first. Take this advice for what it’s worth to you.

Deep linking seems to be a strategy that doesn’t get talked about a heck of a lot these days. Maybe it’s because it’s lost its glamour or people just take it for granted. But I assure you, it is a MOST effective strategy for getting ALL of the pages of your site indexed and ranking high.

Add it to your arsenal of tricks. You should be very pleased with the results.

    To YOUR Success,

  1. Hey Steven,

I never knew that it was called “deep linking”, but I completely agree. I’ve been studying SEO for about a year now and I have a pretty good percentage right now. I think that deep linking (glad I have a name for it now), is key to boosting your website up. For instance, we’re a web design company in westchester so when I post on other sites I have web design westchester and I have it going to my web design services page not my home page. If I have a link that just says black rhino solutions inc. I will have it go to my home page. Great article. I like your ideas and knowledge! I’ll be following more

  2. Great Post Steve. I agree, you have to link to your internal pages. Why bother writing all that content without building links directly to it? You want your site ranking for as many keywords as possible, and the only way you will do that is to link to all your pages.

I just found your blog, keep up the great posts.
