SEO Tips – Are You Wasting Your Time on Your Site

I understand that SEO, both on and off page, is an important part of getting your site ranked. Certainly, you want to take care of your sites and optimize them as well as possible. However, are you wasting time on your sites? Or more specifically, are you spending too much time on the WRONG sites? If this question has you a little bit puzzled, you won’t be after you are done reading this article.

As you know, we have all different kinds of sites. Today, with the technology as advanced as it has become, we can slap a site together in a matter of minutes. Take WordPress as an example. You can install a WordPress blog through Fantastico in Cpanel in a matter of seconds and copy and paste and article into the interface in less than a minute. Inside of no time at all, we have a fully functional site, with content, online. It doesn’t get faster than that.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have custom made sites down the old fashioned way with HTML coding and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Yes, we have HTML editors such as Dreamweaver that make the job a lot easier and go a lot faster. Still, how much time and effort do you think it took to put together a site like Wikipedia? I rest my case. Certainly you can see the disparity between a WordPress blog with one article and a Wikipedia module.

And while these two sites are clearly at opposite ends of the spectrum, this is a perfect way to illustrate my point. Of these two sites, which one are you going to spend more time with as far as SEO? Certainly it’s obvious that the blog will take a lot less effort to optimize than the Wikipedia type site. At least it should. But this is where so many people make their mistakes. They spend exorbitant amounts of time on sites that just don’t warrant that much attention.

But I’m not just talking about the size of the site. I’m talking about the purpose of the site as well. Certainly you can understand that you’re going to spend a lot more time on a site that is bringing you a direct income, such as a sales page, than you would on a site whose only purpose is to drive traffic TO that page. No, I’m not saying to ignore the latter altogether, but to spend as much time on it as the main sales site is wasted time.

In other words, you need to sit down and evaluate each site that you have and from THAT evaluation, determine how much SEO effort, both off and on page, you’re going to put into that site. Otherwise, you’re not using your time wisely.

    It’s really THAT simple.

  1. Hi Steven, I’ve not spent much time looking at other marketers’ blogs, but I’m glad that you have one. I completely agree with you that what’s important is WHERE you put your effort, as opposed to how much effort you put in.

Keep up the good work, I’m bookmarking this blog to revisit regularly.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.
