First off, let me just say that this article is just my opinion and not to be taken as fact. However, that opinion is based on some conversations I’ve had with people and my own observations of what’s going on in the industry. So, you want to know the real truth about why a lot of the gurus are leaving Internet marketing? Keep reading.

I’m not going to mention any names in this article. That way, I get to protect the innocent and the guilty. So let’s begin.

I recently had a conversation with an old friend of mine who is a pretty well known marketer. We talked about the old days of how easy it was to make a killing in this industry. What changed? Well, the biggest change is in the amount of education available to the new people coming into it. Years ago, there wasn’t that much out there that was free, so it was easier to sell info products. Today, people are generally smarter and there is a lot more available to them at no cost. This can do nothing BUT decrease sales.

Then you have the competition factor. Years ago, there weren’t a lot of people in the IM “how to make money” niche. The few that WERE in it made a killing because competition was low. Now, everybody and their grandmother is selling “how to make money” products. Sure, the big names will still have an advantage, but sales are not going to be like they were in the wild west days. And this isn’t just speculation on my part. This comes from speaking to my friend and other people who’ve been at this for a while. Yes, it’s harder today.

So, as a result, a lot of the gurus are pulling out of this particular niche and moving into other areas that are easier to get into. One of those areas is offline marketing. Many brick and mortar businesses have no web presence at all. So, the gurus are starting to move into that area because there isn’t as much competition. This is smart. While I haven’t moved in that direction yet, I’m not ruling it out. So far, sales for me are consistent with the last 3 or 4 years. But if I see a change coming my way, believe me…I’ll be gone.

What YOU need to do is evaluate where YOU are and make sure that the direction you’re heading in is one that is going to be profitable for you in the long term. Sure, nobody has a crystal ball and nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, but in most cases, you can be reasonably sure where your business is heading. Offline brick and mortar just might be the way to go.
