Everybody is jumping on the video marketing train. And why not? It’s about the biggest thing to hit the Internet since podcasting. But people seem to be under the impression that they have to constantly upgrade their software to the latest and greatest thing. This may actually be a bad idea. If you don’t understand why, this article is going to give you a very good reason. Sometimes the piece of software that you have is more than good enough to get the job done and may even be better than the next new thing.

Camtasia is without a doubt probably the most popular video editing software around today. I am personally on Camtasia 4. Do you know what version has just come out? They are up to version 6. Now, you’re probably wondering why I am two versions behind. Well, there are two very good reasons for that. I am going to explain to you what they are.

At the top of the list is bugs. How many times have you updated from one version to the next only to find that it is loaded with bugs? Okay, here is a reality check for all you software junkies. These companies have to keep putting out new versions or their income would get pretty dry. Sure, they get new customers, but they rely heavily on current customers upgrading to the newest version. And because of this, many times, they rush to get the new version out…bugs and all. This is the main reason why I don’t upgrade right away.

But there are other reasons. In Camtasia 6, they took out the ability to create FLV files. I have no idea what possessed them to do this but for me, that’s a bummer. There is no way I’ll ever upgrade to version 6 unless version 4 no longer works on whatever operating system I am using. Why take functionality out? I don’t know, but it’s a reality with software. Sometimes an older version is just better.

Which really leads me to the only thing that really matters. What if the version you’re using is more than good enough for you to get the job done? Why spend money on something that you just don’t need? This always baffles me about people. I have versions of stuff that’s 3 years old. It works great and it’s all I need. So why upgrade?

Point is, before you automatically upgrade your video software, think about whether or not it’s something you REALLY have to do.

It just might save you a lot of money in the long run.
