Why Are Internet Marketers So Concerned With What The Gurus Are Doing?

I honestly don’t get it. Internet marketers are so concerned with what other marketers are doing. Just this week, a well known Internet marketer deleted his Twitter account and suddenly, that’s all anybody can talk about. It’s like it’s the biggest news since Moses parted the Red Sea. But I have to ask, “So what?” Does this person deleting his Twitter account do ANYTHING for MY business? Well, this article is going to dive in the pros and cons of poking our noses into the businesses of other marketers.

Let’s start with the cons because quite honestly, there are more of those than anything else. Probably the biggest con is the waste of time. Every second that we focus on what somebody else is doing, that’s a second that we could have been spending on our own business. Does chatting on forums about the latest guru who did whatever add anything to our bottom line? The only thing it does is distract us from doing things that actually make us money.

But there’s another con that most people don’t think about. See, when you start poking your nose into the business of the guru of the day, this portrays you as somebody who is a gossip. And guess what? Gossips aren’t looked upon as serious marketers. Think about it. Do you see these people talking about you and wondering what YOU are doing? I think not. So if you’re trying to build up your reputation as a serious marketer, this isn’t the way to do it.

Now, having said that, there are some pros to keeping an eye on what other marketers are doing IF you’re focusing on the things that are important. For example, what marketing methods they’re using. What products they’re coming out with, especially if there is a new method being discussed. Plus, you DO want to keep up with what these people write about on their blogs. You’ll get a lot of great info about marketing from doing this. But that’s not the same thing as yapping about so and so and how he just deleted his Twitter account.

    Who cares?

So focus on the things WORTH focusing on. Otherwise, you might find that your business isn’t as profitable as it could be.
